Create Instructional Designs that Celebrate and Support Differences

Even though the differences are well hidden in the parade of identically outfitted men above, we know that no two people are really alike. And these differences are what we celebrate in a rich and diverse culture.

For those of us in the “business” of instructional design consulting, it behooves us to appreciate and support differences in the way people learn. There are many different styles of learning and many different learning models to choose from. As you design learning solutions and advise others as they plan their learning format and delivery, you should blend multiple approaches so your lessons reach all types of learners.

  • For visual learners, include explanatory graphics and easy-to-recall lists.
  • For kinesthetic learners, provide relevant hands-on exercises and opportunities to move around.
  • For audial learners, consider mnemonic devices and cues that rhyme.
Then decide which format will be the most effective…online, classroom, active learning or perhaps a blended combination of all three. Your goal is to engage as many learners as deeply as possible. Think carefully first about how to reach your target audience and then begin your instructional design.
