Brainstorming can be a very effective way to generate new
ideas…as long as you do it right. Instructional design consulting folks who are expert on how to brainstorm effectively set up three cardinal rules:
- Design in the welcoming of every idea. If your design or target audience filters ideas as they are presented, you will quickly lose momentum. Meeting participants will stop thinking creatively and sharing their thoughts for fear of being shot down. The secret to generating a continuous stream of innovative thinking is to suspend judgment until the brainstorming has reached the end of its course.
- Design in good listening. Do not let participants just talk; design a process that ensures they listen carefully to what others are saying, be inspired by another’s thoughts and build upon them.
- Design in methods to keep it moving. Do not analyze ideas too deeply at this point. It is better to gather as many ideas as possible and save closer consideration until later.
