Beware of “Training Spend” Benchmarks

According to the 2013 Corporate Learning Factbook, US training organizations grew their spending by twelve percent last year--the highest growth rate in the last eight years.

Corporations spent more than $60 billion on training in the US alone with more than half of all investments going toward "non-instructor led" solutions in the areas of support tools and coaching. And when it came to average investment per person, the report found "average" spend on corporate training to be approximately $706 per year with a range from $200 to over $3,000 per year depending on the industry.

Large instructional design clients almost always ask us at some point during our relationship how they compare to their peers. They invariably want to prove that other comparable companies spend more so that they can ask for more budget dollars to do more work.

Here’s a strong word of caution. It does not matter what your peers spend on training or instructional design. Only your business strategy and the moves required to get to your business goals matter. Your investments and approaches should be unique to your specific situation, strategy, culture, and talent.
